How does your product idea get made and end up on the store shelves?

“How does your awesome product idea get made and end up on the store shelves?”

A typical product is born from an awesome idea or a scientific market study. In general, a great product idea is something most people NEED. Your idea either solves a common problem millions of consumers share or it is an idea that vastly improves upon an existing product. In general, a typical product idea goes thru these steps before ending up on your local store shelves:

1) AN IDEA IS BORN

We all have had those moments when the “light bulb” lights up in our heads. Ding or some Ka-Ching for others…

2) THE IDEA IS TESTED

Whether sharing it with your closest friends or family, your idea typically goes through a round of “so, what do you think about my idea?” This is also a good time to look around the internet and your local store shelves… find out if similar product ideas already exist.

3) THE STARTING POINT

Once you’ve determined that your idea is unique and truly awesome, it’s time to start thinking about how to share it with the world. It’s time for your idea to be drawn up on paper so it can be legally registered or shared with investors/ business partners.

4) DESIGN

Find a professional industrial designer or industrial design firm to take your idea and put it in polished sketches and 3D computer drawings. Why “TELL” your ideas to investors when you can “SHOW IT!” A professional drawing of your idea is a powerful tool in getting everyone excited.

5) PROTOTYPE IT

Even more powerful is an actual physical PROTOTYPE of your product idea. A 3D computer rendering is required to create a basic Prototype of your idea, something everyone can hold in their hands. Depending on how complex your product idea is, it may require additional ENGINEERING to create a prototype.

6) RAISE MONEY

Now that you have an impressive drawing, a prototype of your product idea, it’s time to share it with the world. You can start getting ready for the next steps by finding a business partner or an INVESTOR … or you can use crowd funding websites to raise money you will need to continue. It doesn’t matter how your raise your funds, but you will need a significant amount of money to move forward to the next steps of your idea becoming manufacture ready.

7) GET IT MADE

The world is excited about your genius idea to hit the store shelves… it’s time to get it MADE. In order to do this, your product will need to go thru final engineering. Depending on how complex your product idea is, this step is crucial for your success. A professional engineering firm is necessary to complete this step.

8) TOOLING AND SOURCING

After engineering, your product will go thru TOOLING and SOURCING of parts. If your product requires unique parts, a new mold will need to be made and parts must be TOOLED. Some parts can be sourced to be purchased, such as batteries that already exist. This step is crucial to determine the final cost of your product when it is made and delivered.

9) MANUFACTURING

Now it’s ready to be made. A factory will need to be chosen, depending on cost, quality, and location. It’s important that the manufacturing stage is closely managed by a third party Quality Control professional to avoid any delays and disasters when your product gets purchased by consumers

10) HITTING THE SHELVES

After satisfactory inspection, your product is shipped and distributed! Congratulations, your awesome idea is now on the store shelves!
